Cabinet bases do not rot from a burst pipe. They rot from the slow drip nobody sees, sitting under a plastic tray for months. The Magic Carpet® Under Sink Mat is an absorbent liner that pulls a small leak into its core and spreads it out, so you can see it, smell it, and fix it before the particleboard goes soft.
Why a plastic under sink tray hides the problem
A waterproof tray with a lip is designed to catch a leak. It also traps it. Water sits in the low corner of the tray, under the cleaning bottles, and evaporates slowly into the cabinet. You do not find it until the smell shows up. An absorbent mat does the opposite. The water spreads across the mat and darkens it, which is your signal to look for the drip.
The Magic Carpet® is dense needlepunched polyester with a patented pass-through wicking core. It absorbs about 4.5 times its dry weight. It is strong and puncture-resistant, so the garbage disposal, the trash can, and the bottle of drain cleaner sliding around do not cut it.

Under sink mat questions
Does it have a waterproof backing?
No. It is designed to absorb and show you the leak, not to contain a large volume of water. If you need a catch basin for a known active leak, use a tray until the leak is fixed and then put the mat back to watch for the next one.
Will it grow mildew?
Any wet textile can if it stays wet in a closed cabinet. That is why the mat is meant to be a signal. When it darkens, take it out, dry it, and fix the drip.
